{"id":344,"date":"2008-09-05T10:35:47","date_gmt":"2008-09-05T14:35:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jeffclarke.us\/blog\/?p=344"},"modified":"2008-09-05T10:37:11","modified_gmt":"2008-09-05T14:37:11","slug":"new-microsoft-ads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jeffclarke.us\/blog\/2008\/09\/new-microsoft-ads\/","title":{"rendered":"New Microsoft Ads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Have you seen the new Microsoft ads?\u00a0 The first one of the nearly $300 million campaign featuring <a href=\"http:\/\/gawker.com\/5039828\/mac+loving-seinfeld-endorsing-microsoft-for-10-million\" target=\"_blank\">Jerry Seinfeld<\/a> aired last night (I caught it somewhere in one of the Daily Show&#8217;s commercial breaks).<\/p>\n<p>One word: LAME.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jeffclarke.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/mssein.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-345\" title=\"mssein\" src=\"http:\/\/jeffclarke.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/mssein.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"378\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jerry helps Bill Gates buy a pair of shoes.\u00a0 They mention Microsoft one time.\u00a0 That&#8217;s all that happens.\u00a0 The whole thing seems like they&#8217;re trying to be funny, but it was decidedly not.\u00a0 No matter how hard Jerry tries, he can&#8217;t make the ultimate nerd, Bill Gates, seem anything other than embarrassingly quirky and introverted.<\/p>\n<p>According to an internal memo from Microsoft VP Bill Veghte:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The first phase of this campaign is designed to engage consumers and spark a new conversation about Windows \u2013 a conversation that will evolve as the campaign progresses, but will always be marked by humor and humanity.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So far the conversation my girlfriend and I have had on the subject was, &#8216;My god that sucked.&#8217;\u00a0 But we talked about it right?\u00a0 I guess their plan is working.<\/p>\n<p>This whole thing is part of Microsoft&#8217;s new strategy (backed by their pseudo-science &#8216;experiment&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/2008\/07\/29\/microsofts-new-vista-ad-campaign-microsoft-mojave\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Mojave Project<\/a>) to fix Vista not with innovations and patches, but with an ad campaign:<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Vista: It&#8217;s really not as bad it you think it is.&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t think that&#8217;s their actual copy, but that&#8217;s the idea.\u00a0 Win the hearts and minds of millions by convincing them that the best you have to offer is not nearly as bad as they thought it was.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s kind of like the platform the Republicans are running on.<\/p>\n<p>My response to all of this?\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/getamac\/ads\/\" target=\"_blank\">Get a Mac<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Have you seen the new Microsoft ads?\u00a0 The first one of the nearly $300 million campaign featuring Jerry Seinfeld aired last night (I caught it somewhere in one of the Daily Show&#8217;s commercial breaks).
