{"id":456,"date":"2008-09-22T09:11:16","date_gmt":"2008-09-22T13:11:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jeffclarke.us\/blog\/?p=456"},"modified":"2008-09-22T11:17:01","modified_gmt":"2008-09-22T15:17:01","slug":"reduce-plastic-waste-recycle-old-cdsdvds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jeffclarke.us\/blog\/2008\/09\/reduce-plastic-waste-recycle-old-cdsdvds\/","title":{"rendered":"Reduce Plastic Waste &#8211; Recycle Old CDs\/DVDs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the weekend I was doing a bit of video work for my theater company &#8212; compiling some work sample DVDs.\u00a0 A couple of times (as sometimes happens), Toast threw an error that turned an otherwise perfectly usable DVD into a coaster.\u00a0 This, over time and over a large number of users, must generate a lot of waste.<\/p>\n<p>Since the idea of generating less waste has been on my mind a lot lately &#8212; especially in terms of trying to reduce my consumption of plastic &#8212; I started investigating whether CDs and DVDs were recyclable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/jeffclarke.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/recycle_solid_logo_jpeg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-458 aligncenter\" title=\"cheesy recycle image\" src=\"http:\/\/jeffclarke.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/recycle_solid_logo_jpeg.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"352\" height=\"343\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Turns out, yes!\u00a0 There are a couple of services that will accept old CDs and DVDs (and their cases), recycle them, and send them back out into the world:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/cdrecyclingcenter.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">CD Recycling Center<\/a> is a free resource that accepts CDs, DVDs, HD-DVDs, Blue-Ray discs and CD cases for free (!!!) all you have to pay for is postage.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/discstation.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">EcoDisc<\/a> does the same<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are probably more out there &#8212; these were just the easiest ones to find on Google.\u00a0 It&#8217;s also possible your city&#8217;s recycling program accepts these items along with your plastic recycling.<\/p>\n<p>This is all good news, no?\u00a0 Yes, it takes a little bit of effort, but not too much.\u00a0 And it seems worthwhile to not unnecessarily contribute any more plastic to our landfills or the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Great_Pacific_Garbage_Patch\" target=\"_blank\">accumulation of plastic in our ocean&#8217;s gyres<\/a> (why the latter doesn&#8217;t show up in the news more often is completely baffling to me).<\/p>\n<p>If there were any justice in the world, AOL would foot any bills generated by recycling CDs and DVDs.\u00a0 I would love to see a figure on what percentage of CDs in our landfills came from them&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over the weekend I was doing a bit of video work for my theater company &#8212; compiling some work sample DVDs.\u00a0 A couple of times (as sometimes happens), Toast threw an error that turned an otherwise perfectly usable DVD into a coaster.\u00a0 This, over time and over a large number of users, must generate a [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[22],"tags":[191,190,188,189],"class_list":["post-456","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-ramblings","tag-gyre","tag-plastic","tag-recycle","tag-waste"],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/jeffclarke.us\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/456","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/jeffclarke.us\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/jeffclarke.us\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/jeffclarke.us\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/jeffclarke.us\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=456"}],"version-history":[{"count":5,"href":"http:\/\/jeffclarke.us\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/456\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":463,"href":"http:\/\/jeffclarke.us\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/456\/revisions\/463"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/jeffclarke.us\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=456"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/jeffclarke.us\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=456"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/jeffclarke.us\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=456"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
