{"id":48,"date":"2008-07-14T15:57:19","date_gmt":"2008-07-14T19:57:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jeffclarke.us\/blog\/?p=48"},"modified":"2008-07-14T16:05:12","modified_gmt":"2008-07-14T20:05:12","slug":"the-lawyers-must-be-crazy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jeffclarke.us\/blog\/2008\/07\/the-lawyers-must-be-crazy\/","title":{"rendered":"The Lawyers Must Be Crazy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ok.\u00a0 So we all know by now about Lori Drew &#8212; the girl who maliciously concocted a MySpace campaign that led to her <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Megan_Meier\">adolescent neighbor&#8217;s suicide<\/a>.\u00a0 Bad news.\u00a0 She deserves what she gets from the legal system.<\/p>\n<p>But this?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/http:\/\/www.secureworks.com\/research\/falsepositive.php\" target=\"_blank\">Lori Drew Charged with Violating the Computer  Fraud and Abuse Act<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Really?\u00a0 Not, like, 2nd degree murder?\u00a0 or manslaughter? Or something with teeth?<\/p>\n<p>The scary thing about it is the implications on the rest of us.\u00a0 She was basically charged with logging into MySpace under a fake name to gather information, which is a violation of title 130 section (a) (2) (c) of the US Code.\u00a0 A FELONY.\u00a0 If she&#8217;s found guilty for each of the 4 counts, she could get up to 15 years.\u00a0 For pretending to be someone else on the internet.<\/p>\n<p>Which is something that is so far beyond commonplace on the internet, I would hazard to say it&#8217;s practically the NORM.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t get me wrong.\u00a0 I think what Drew did was inhuman.\u00a0 But seriously, lawyers.\u00a0 WTF?<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know what else to say exactly.\u00a0 This is mind blowing.\u00a0 Why on earth would the lawyers in this case think this is a good law to put in the books?\u00a0 OR that it would not be appealed and overturned?<\/p>\n<p>Ridiculous.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d move to Canada, but Apple took back most of their iPhones.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ok.\u00a0 So we all know by now about Lori Drew &#8212; the girl who maliciously concocted a MySpace campaign that led to her adolescent neighbor&#8217;s suicide.\u00a0 Bad news.\u00a0 She deserves what she gets from the legal system.
