{"id":385,"date":"2008-09-16T14:02:35","date_gmt":"2008-09-16T18:02:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jeffclarke.us\/blog\/?p=385"},"modified":"2008-09-16T14:11:38","modified_gmt":"2008-09-16T18:11:38","slug":"riddle-me-this","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jeffclarke.us\/blog\/2008\/09\/riddle-me-this\/","title":{"rendered":"Riddle Me This"},"content":{"rendered":"<ol>\n<li>McCain has been saying for weeks that the &#8216;fundamentals of the economy are strong.&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>Yesterday, Wall Street plunged 500 points in response to the disintegration of Lehman brothers (a 150 year old company) and the sale of Merrill Lynch to Bank of America.<\/li>\n<li>Also yesterday, Matt Lauer asked McCain if he still thought the economy was strong.<\/li>\n<li>He responded that Wall Street is &#8216;in crisis&#8217; because of its own &#8216;greed and corruption,&#8217; but, to clarify, in his mind <a href=\"http:\/\/thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com\/2008\/09\/16\/mccain-calls-for-commission-to-study-wall-street-woes\/?hp\" target=\"_blank\">the &#8216;fundamentals of the economy&#8217; are the American workers<\/a>.  Just to be clear.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>What?\u00a0 What on earth does that mean?\u00a0 The fundamentals of the economy are the workers.\u00a0 In a sense that&#8217;s both incredibly obvious and seriously thickheaded&#8230; unless I&#8217;m missing something.\u00a0 I&#8217;m sure he&#8217;s just trying to rescind his statement by simply rephrasing it (oh politics&#8230;).\u00a0 But logically I&#8217;m not even sure what he&#8217;s trying to say.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_391\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/jeffclarke.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/rosie_the_riveter.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-391\" class=\"size-full wp-image-391\" title=\"Rosie the Riveter\" src=\"http:\/\/jeffclarke.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/rosie_the_riveter.jpg\" alt=\"A Fundamental of the Economy\" width=\"400\" height=\"518\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-391\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Fundamental of the Economy<\/p><\/div>\n<p>1.<strong> The workers aren&#8217;t the problem!\u00a0 It&#8217;s the system that&#8217;s screwed up!<\/strong> (to which we say&#8230; nobody thought the workers themselves were the problem)<\/p>\n<p>2. <strong>America&#8217;s workers are in great shape and they will power the recovery of the economy! <\/strong>(which seems more than a little delusional.\u00a0 How low is minimum wage?\u00a0 How high is unemployment? How many jobs get sent overseas each year?\u00a0 How many workers is Lehman about to lay off?)<\/p>\n<p>3.<strong> Capitalist society is awesome!<\/strong> (seems like what that statement means in isolation, right?\u00a0 The fundamentals of the economy are the workers.\u00a0 &#8230; Except you can apply that statement to communism too, can&#8217;t you?\u00a0 Maybe not that, then.\u00a0 Republicans have never liked those galdern Reds.)<\/p>\n<p>Any guesses anyone?<\/p>\n<p>And I have to say&#8230; can someone please call him on the fact that he&#8217;s part of the &#8216;greed and corruption of Wall Street&#8217; that is, in his view, the <em>actual<\/em> problem?<\/p>\n<p>First off, he&#8217;s part of the same greedmongering system that got us into this in the first place.\u00a0 Yes?\u00a0 Maybe a little oversight isn&#8217;t such a bad idea after all.\u00a0 (although, being a republican, McCain cannot call for more oversight.\u00a0 he instead can only appeal to &#8216;Wall Street&#8217; to try to <em>be less greedy<\/em>. good luck with that.)<\/p>\n<p>Second, how is he not greedy himself?\u00a0 He doesn&#8217;t even remember how many freaking houses he owns!\u00a0 How many of those houses could he possibly need?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>McCain has been saying for weeks that the &#8216;fundamentals of the economy are strong.&#8217; Yesterday, Wall Street plunged 500 points in response to the disintegration of Lehman brothers (a 150 year old company) and the sale of Merrill Lynch to Bank of America.
