Vatican Rewrites History On Galileo<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Many of you may not remember this, but Galileo<\/a> was condemned by the Catholic Church for his radical belief in Copernicus<\/a>‘ ideas of a heliocentric<\/a> solar system.\u00a0 Cardinal Robert Bellarmine <\/a>(for whom my high school was named, incidentally), was the one who did the honors — arguing for the bible and against things like logic, scientific progress, etc.\u00a0 Galileo was found guilty of heresy, and was sentenced to life imprisonment (later commuted to house arrest).<\/p>\n

BUT WAIT!!!\u00a0 Just in time for the holidays, the Catholic Church is gearing up to change history!\u00a0 Rather than condemn Galileo, they’re all set to re-cast him as the patron saint of “the dialogue between faith and reason.”\u00a0 Which, as you can imagine, seems somewhat ironic given how that particular ‘dialogue’ ended.\u00a0 And how pretty much every other ‘dialogue’ between science has played out since the beginning of time.<\/p>\n

But hey!\u00a0 The church is totally hip!\u00a0 They can be with it!\u00a0 They can change their minds 400 years after the fact.\u00a0 On a geologic scale, that’s a really quick decision!<\/p>\n

Right?<\/p>\n

… I know.\u00a0 You have your doubts that this will change anything.\u00a0 But if the church can transform a former member of Hitler Youth <\/a>into the current Pope, maybe they can re-fashion the way they interact with the scientific community.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
