Taking a Long Weekend, Facebook?

Friday, September 4th, 2009

I know Facebook has done some tweaking of their UI lately (most notably to get rid of those spiffy, but apparently very difficult to maintain, rounded corners on the pictures), but they seem to be getting a little careless in terms of what gets out to production.  Working for a large company myself, I know sometimes things can accidentally come out of the oven a little before they’re cooked.  I’m just surprised to see this from Facebook.

Check this out:

1. The logo is blurry.  Maybe they’re trying to reduce the file size?  But man. I think that’s a no-no.  Maybe it’s worth the extra K or two to have the logo be sharp?

2. The borders on all of their photos in the (freaking annoying) Highlights section are totally out of whack:

Come on Facebook! Pull yourself together!  It’s not the weekend yet!  Put down the margarita, re-save your logo, tweak your CSS and THEN you can leave for your rafting trip.  K?

This cracks me up:

Thanks,  Failblog, and Happy Friday everyone!

Also, I would encourage you to vote for Failblog in the Webbys (since I keep stealing their images), but since voting is closed I’ll have to just encourage you to cross your fingers instead.  Good luck, Failblog!

Unfixable Hack

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

These are words you don’t necessarily like to hear together if you work in the software industry.  But some clever hackers at the Hack in the Box Security Conference in Dubai just demonstrated a 3K file that is a permanent, unfixable hack to Windows 7.

Granted, you need physical access to the machine — it can’t be executed remotely.  So while it’s useful for an inside job, it wouldn’t be so useful if someone wanted to, say, crack into a computer at Credite Suisse from their couch.

Still, it’s bad.  Un-fixable, and totally untraceable.

Close Before Opening

Yes.  I see what you’re saying, but I’m not quite sure you mean what you think you do.

What on Earth Are They Thinking?

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

Ok Lenovo.  Let’s talk.  Man to company.

I used to be a huge ThinkPad fan.  Huge.  My parents worked for IBM for a bunch of years and we used to have at least 3 ThinkPads floating around the house at any given time.  They were great, tough little machines.

I had my doubts when IBM sold their ThinkPad line to you.  On one hand, IBM’s quality control had shrunk to the point where it was basically non-existent, so I couldn’t imagine another company doing worse than Big Blue already was.  Still, I was skpetical enough to start buying Mac.

But I was curious enough to keep my eye on you.  And you certainly did come out with some little gems. Your X Tablet series with the pivoting screen that turns into a writing tablet? Genius.  Really, you outdid yourself with that one.  My brother has had one since they came out and loves it.

So what’s with the W700DS?  What the heck is that?
